Summary:
A UK-based SME offers its catalogue of recombinant proteins to companies and academia for research and development programmes. These proteins were developed originally for academic research and due to their quality and high stability have been used as rare antigens to generate highly specific antibodies or develop unique assays. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of commercial agreements with technical assistance, manufacturing agreements or technical cooperation agreements.
Description:
There is increasing use of recombinant proteins in life sciences and healthcare research. They are very useful in understanding protein-protein interactions and as such are important in the study of disease and in developing treatments. However, this requires proteins specific to the disease and disease process being studied being produced. It also requires that these proteins are of a very high quality and are stable. Collectively these are hard to achieve.

A UK-based SME has expertise in the development of recombinant proteins for research and has developed a catalogue of such proteins developed for academic research. These proteins include hard to manufacture growth factor receptors and enzymes among others. These proteins are manufactured to a high quality enabling the generation of highly specific antibodies and the development of unique assays. In addition to this catalogue the SME is able to work with partners to develop new recombinant proteins for their research.

The SME is looking to work with partners from industry and academia who are engaging in research in healthcare and life sciences, particularly in relation to the study of disease and treatment development. The SME will offer access to its recombinant protein catalogue as well as technical expertise to the partner. Where the desired protein is not already part of the catalogue the SME will work with the partner to develop it. The SME expects the partner to provide feedback on performance in order to help them further develop their offer. It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a commercial agreement with technical assistance, a manufacturing agreement or a technical cooperation agreement depending on the particular project and the needs of the partner.
Advantages and Innovations:
The SMEs technology has the following advantages:

An extensive catalogue of hard to manufacture recombinant proteins.

High quality enabling the development of specific antibodies and assays.

High degree of stability enabling research to be carried out without the need for any additional special measures.

Development of specific proteins of interest if they are not already in the catalogue

Shortened production time compared to the standard production time: weeks as opposed to months of traditional cell line development.

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The UK-based SME is looking to partner with other companies, research institutions and universities, in particular those operating in the drug development or discovery fields. The SME will provide access to its catalogue of recombinant proteins to the partner as well as technical assistance in regards to the catalogue. In cases where the required protein is not already in the catalogue the SME will work with the partner to develop it. The SME expects the partner to provide feedback and information on the performance of the library proteins in research in order to enable the SME to improve the technology.

It is envisaged that the partnership will take the form of a commercial agreement with technical assistance, a manufacturing agreement or a technical cooperation agreement depending on the specific circumstances of the partner organisation.
