Description:
This UK SME, based in North Wales, operates in the waste management sector and specialises in the design, supply, and management of on-farm waste anaerobic digestion (AD) plants. The core team consists of biotechnology and agricultural engineering experts, with an aim to implement the technology on farms across the globe and promote pollution abatement. The company custom build and install AD plants to suit each farm´s waste management and energy needs and to date, have installed nine 80kW-500kW on-farm digesters across the UK.

Typically, mainstream AD plants are unable to simultaneously process the large varieties of gritty, high strength organic wastes found on farms i.e. slurries, manure or waste crops. As a result, operators have to sort through and process the various waste streams separately, proving time consuming and operationally inefficient.

Most conventional digesters are fully mixed systems which involve continuously agitating the tank´s materials, using mixers and paddles, to prevent grit from entering the system in suspension. Such AD´s silt up over time, eventually compromising the processing capacity and causing plants to be shut down, for anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months, in order to empty and re-commission tanks back to operational capacity.

Microbial foaming commonly occurs in tanks processing high strength feed stocks and often form if processing capacity is compromised by the accumulation of grit and silt. Poor foam management can seriously damage or destroy AD generators, causing plants to shut down and undergo repairs for generally 6-8 weeks, leading to an economic loss.

Therefore, the Welsh SME offers patented combined de-gritting with activated sequential gas-mixing and foam alleviation technology designed to process grit-laden, high strength farm wastes, removing the need to agitate and de-silt tanks. The patented systems are proven, robust, and engineered to address the technical limitations found in mainstream AD offerings. The technology can also be used to create nutrient rich digestate, removing a farmer´s need to externally source fertiliser to farmland/crops.

The client primarily seeks licensing and joint venture agreements from SMEs (11-250) and/or large AD suppliers across Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and the USA - with partners from Delaware and Wisconsin desired. A licensing and joint venture agreement from such markets is sought because of their perceived potential to build and integrate the offered technology into existing agricultural systems and practices. Partners should be able to target local dairy/poultry farmers/landowners as primary customers of the licensed technology.

By accessing small/large AD suppliers with industry links to farmers, the client hopes to support global waste management and pollution abatement goals whilst maximising soil nutrient levels, via the licensed proprietary technology, as a result of international partnership.
Advantages and Innovations:
The client offers anaerobic digestion technology fitted with patented combined de-gritting with gas-actuated mixing and foam alleviation systems. The AD plant co-digests large varieties of high strength organic wastes (slurries, manures, poultry litter, waste crops, abattoir arisings) and removes the need to sort through and process individual waste streams.

Extraction of grit, soil, glass and other inorganic contaminants from the AD reactor prevents silt build up and removes the need to regularly agitate and de-silt tanks - sustaining maximum operational capacities. Combined de-gritting with sequential gas-mixing encourages inorganic matter to settle out for routine removal, allowing digested materials to be selectively extracted.
- Gas mixing system reduces amount of energy required to operate a plant.
- Insulated fibreglass roof minimises amount of heat lost during processes.

The innovative foam alleviation system automatically removes and re-processes microbial foam - mitigating any risk of foam damage and again, ensuring optimal efficiency. The AD plants repurpose organic feedstocks to create a nutrient rich digestate which can be used as biofertilizer, removing the need to externally source fertilizer.

The technology provides long term economic and environmental benefits to support a dairy/poultry farm´s viability and future.
- Offers an integrated, whole systems approach.
- Can be custom built to support each farm´s waste management, energy, and pollution abatement needs according to geographical locations and desired outcomes.
- Energy produced can self-sustain the farm or sold on to National Grids (if eligible).

Farmers already possess the scientific understanding behind agricultural processes and animal nutrition.
- Prove ideal candidates for installing and utilising on-farm AD facilities.
- Very little training/re-skilling required to operate a plant; option to receive remote technical support from the client is also available.

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The offering client is open to partnering with multiple types of partners willing and capable of building an anaerobic digestion plant within the defined scope of the licensed technology - with freedom to operate following a licensing agreement. Partners should have the desire to engage and integrate AD as part of a core business strategy and to minimise the businesses´ environmental impact and/or diversify business opportunities.

Prospective partners are expected to have a wealth of local expertise in renewable technologies with access to manufacturing and maintenance resources to support projects locally - removing the need to transport system engineers from the UK.

The client primarily seeks small, medium, or large anaerobic digestion suppliers with sound reputation from the countries outlined above to target farmers in dairy/poultry industries. Agricultural cooperatives/rural community organisations from the target locations, capable of installing and operating the AD technology, would also be considered.

A partner´s capabilities and relationship formed with the offering client will determine whether local partners simply drive and manage regional sales, installation, and servicing or be awarded full license rights for that location and country.

Research -Y- Development institutes seeking the patented systems under a license agreement partnership may also be considered.
