Description:
The Ukrainian machine-building R-Y-D institution offers the technology for the production of CNTs, which can be used as an additive to seals.
CNTs are a modification of carbon in the form of a hollow cylinder, which consists of one or more hexagonal graphite planes (graphene) rolled in a tube. It usually has a hemispherical cap at the end. The diameter ranges from a few tenths to a few tens of nanometers, and the length is from micrometers to a few centimeters.
The hydrocarbon catalytic pyrolysis allows for producing the vertically aligned CNTs and is comprised of the following steps: after the reaction chamber has been evacuated, the catalytic target is exposed to the pulsed laser radiation from an additional source, therefore, the deposition starts on the substrate from separate drops. A gas mix is injected through the branch pipe, and the laser beam, with the wavelength of 0.248-10.6 micrometers, scans over the substrate along the pre-set trajectory, thus, growing CNTs according to the pre-set picture.
The machine-building industry is permanently working at reducing of the parasitic leakages from the engines working space, minimizing the size of a unit, assembly metal reduction; providing the absence of eventual interference between blades and shell in a turbine and reliable rotor seizure at the restart in the case of engine shutdown in the flight, increasing pressurization and rotational speed (at reduced wear) of bearing hull as well as elevating the overall performance of a gas turbine engine. The aim of the offered technology is to solve all of the mentioned problems.
The institution seeks cooperation with a company interested in developing and producing new CNT-based components to establish the manufacturing or technical cooperation agreement in order to reach the international market.
Advantages and Innovations:
The main advantages of the presented technology, in comparison with the existing ones, are a higher extent of vertical alignment of CNTs, application locality, and absence of separation and transfer of the CNTs to the surface of the end item need.
Changing from the labyrinth to CNTs seals can make it possible to:
- reduce parasitic leakages of the working medium;
- reduce axial size in the unit;
- reduce the weight of the metal structure;
- exclude the possibility of blades and casing interference, and rotor seizure at the restart in case of engine shutdown in flight;
- increase the degree of pressurization of bearing housings, etc.;
- increase the rotational speed to 500 m/s (at reduced wear);
- operate at temperatures up to 1000 °C and differential pressure up to 2 MPa;
- increase the gas turbine performance at the cost of low friction coefficient and high Young´s modulus of elasticity.
