A group of researchers of a German university, specialized in material science and engineering technology, invented a filter unit that has one or multiple microwave resonators integrated into the filter material. The invention presents an effective solution for monitoring filter load during operation. This opens up for technical capabilities like filtring contents out of gases or fluids. The invention is suitable for various filter materials and can be utilized in industrial applications or safety technologies.
Normally the efficiency of filter units is essentially dependent on filter load. Several options to determine filter load exist. For example, pressure drop or increasing mass. Contrary to the usual practise those existing methods are complex moreover the filtration process needs to be interrupted in certain intervals to exchange or regenerate the filter unit. A missing monitoring option therefore often leads to filter exchanges that are not yet necessary. To avoid unnecessary and expensive filter exchanges, the monitoring of filter load during operation is very important.
The solution, presented by the researchers, is a filter unit containing special material that is added into the electromagnetic field of a microwave resonator. As the induced microwaves are affected by the accumulating filtered material it leads to conclusions about filter load or composition of the filtered material itself.
Integration of a microwave resonator into a filter unit can be easily accomplished by sewing or embroiling conductive material in form of fibres or thin wires into the filter material. Another possibility is printing or spraying the resonator onto the filter. The production of such filter units can be realized cost-effectively.
The microwave resonator is applicable in the fields of filtration of contents out of gases or fluids and well suited for filter technologies in industrial or safety technologies such as industrial waste air, safety at work, fire service and disaster control.
The university offers its future-oriented and cost-effective solution to research-institutes or companies to further develop the filter unit and to bring it on the market. The university searches a cooperation partner for a licence agreement worldwide.
