Una empresa holandesa participa como socio de valoración en un programa espacial específico en cooperación con la Agencia Espacial Europea. La investigación llevada a cabo en este programa ha dado como resultado una unidad de tratamiento de agua negra para tratar y degradar residuos orgánicos (materia fecal, papel higiénico, orina y residuos de cocina). Estos residuos orgánicos se descomponen en compuestos más pequeños mediante un enfoque microbiológico que se realiza en tres fases. Se buscan socios industriales en el campo de tratamiento de agua para licenciar la tecnología. Una de sus aplicaciones es el procesamiento de material descompuesto para recuperar nutrientes de aguas residuales.

Summary:
Since 2005 a Dutch company is the valorization partner of a specific Space program in close cooperation with the European Space Agency. Research from this program has resulted in a black water treatment unit to treat and degrade organic waste material. The Dutch company is looking for industry partners active in the water treatment field to license this technology. One application could be the further processing of the decomposed material to recover nutrients from the waste water.
Description:
The black water treatment unit is designed to treat and degrade organic waste material such as faecal matter, toilet paper, urine and also kitchen waste. These organic waste materials are broken down into smaller components using a microbiological approach that occurs in three stages.

The first stage is a liquefaction compartment and functions as a anaerobic reactor that liquefies the waste material into carbon dioxide, colatile fatty acids and ammonium at 55 ¿ with pH of 5.5. The second stage is a methanogenic compartment with bacteria that transform volatile fatty acids into methane and carbon dioxide in the absence of oxygen. The third stage is a nitrifying compartment were ammonia and minerals are broken down into nitrate using two bacterial strains in the presence of oxygen.

The Dutch company is looking for industry partners active in the water treatment field to license this technology. One application could be the recovery of nutrients and reclamation of waste water when further processing the decomposed material.
