Consequently, it reduces cost and increases performance of these digital circuits. The university is interested in licensing agreement or technical cooperation with companies to enhance their designs by adapting them by using this technique.
Description:
A research group from a spanish university developed a method for improving digital systems, involving numeric computation, through a novel design technique.

Applications of digital processing systems are continuously growing and they increasingly demand better performance and lower power and energy consumption. That requires designing faster processing circuits with lower area and power consumption. However improvement on one of this aspect generally involves degradation of the others. Another option is changing the implementation technology, but this solution highly increments cost and time-to-market.

This university offers a new design technique which allows improving area, power and performance without changing the support technology. The processing elements are transformed at logic level in a straightforward way, such as some elements are eliminated or the word-length reduced, although keeping the same accuracy and functionality. That may produce, for example, area and power improvements ranging between 10% to 40% for the same speed and accuracy.

The proposed solution could be applied to designing specific application circuits, soft-core or general purpose processor, and for any application field whether real number computation (either floating- or fixed-point) is involved. Since it is logic level design is useful for either ASIC or FPGA solution.

The University is looking for cooperation with companies operating in manufacture industries of integrated circuits. More specifically, companies focused on developing SoC, or IP-cores, companies developing EDA tools for VLSI design, etc. The cooperation agreement sought are the licensing or technical cooperation to test new applications or adapting the system to specifics needs.

Advantages of using the present invention for digital circuit design include:
· It simultaneously increases speed and reduces area and power consumption of arithmetic units.
· It produces cheaper circuits with increased performance and reduced energy consumption.
·Straightforward adaptation of existing logic designs, allowing short time to market and very low development cost.
·It does not require changing the implementation technology, supporting any of them, including FPGA or ASIC.
·Valid for any digital system involving computation with real numbers, including fixed- and floating-point.
