At present there are only two ways to generate a tan, through deliberate UV exposure which induces a tan as a response to UV damage. Or the use of chemical skin staining technology. Both have disadvantages, with sunlight-induced tanning also being responsible for permanent skin changes through photo-ageing and an increased skin cancer risk. Whilst there has been considerable improvements in the chemical tan market; products often do not result in a natural tan and the effect is temporary.
To address this the UK university had researched and discovered novel peptide technology that has shown it can elevate the amount of melanin in the skin. It employs the skins own pigmentary system to make a tan, without the need for the UV element.

A licence agreement to cover the full patent rights to include a period of time-bound exclusivity is sought. The partner would ideally be able to develop the product for clinical evaluation exploring the scope and potential of this new technology for a safe tan.
Advantages and Innovations:
Sunless tanning that harnesses the way each person´s own skin normally makes melanin would provide both an alternative segment in this growing sector as well as a new ingredient to existing products such as body and face care products.
