Spanish food company offers a comprehensive solution for the treatment and recovery of by-products and waste from the food industry by using insects with the aim of producing feed ingredients intended for animal feed and fertilizer. The company seeks food companies, producers of animal feed, agri-food laboratories, to reach commercial agreement with technical assistance and joint venture agreements.
Newly established Spanish company whose mission is to provide a comprehensive solution for the treatment and recovery of by-products and waste from the food industry by using insects.

This is a company focused on the implementation of By-products and Waste Treatment Units (BWTU) using insects for converting by-products and waste from the food industry in authorized ingredients for animal feed.

The production process can transform low value-added products in raw materials of interest. Fat and protein can be used in feeding chickens, pigs, aquaculture and pets, chitosan is a raw material of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry, and the residue of growth of the larva is an excellent organic fertilizer.

Insects require minimal water, nutrients, space and energy and their CO2 footprint is low. Their unique biology can be exploited as a key instrument in the Implementation of circulating bio economy for upgrading of low value to high value organic feeds, foods and non-food products.

Organic wastes from many sources (e.g., agriculture and aquaculture, food processing and handling, food and medical industry waste) may be used as insect rearing feed. For example, every year approximately 1.3 billion tonnes (1/3 of the world food production) is lost or wasted and could easily be recycled by insects.

Insects can be essential elements in reducing the burden that bio wastes and food production put on resources of nutrients and water, land use and climate.

The use of one type of waste or other depends on the availability of these and the desired product commercial destination. The "minimum" volume for the development of a commercially viable plant is about 100 tons / day.

Depending on customers and/or investors needs the company develops the phases of the project from pilot tests to the functional description of engineering for the implementation of the treatment unit and the final project management.

Advantages and Innovations:
Over the last 60 years, farmed cattle, chickens, pigs and fish have increasingly been fed on grains, soy and fishmeal.

Many of these feedstocks are high-quality sources of protein that could be used to feed humans, particularly in places where protein deficiency is common. Additionally, the use of fish as animal feed puts pressure on our ocean ecosystems.

Developing new sources of animal feed to meet the growing demand for animal protein is critical for taking the pressure off land use, and to reduce the overall land footprint of agriculture and impact on ocean ecosystems.

In 2014, 980 million tonnes of animal feed was produced, worth around $460 billion and increasing demand will surely lead to larger and larger volumes. Soymeal and fishmeal are the incumbent forms of feed, but each is arguably reaching limitations in current production, for example, 80% of the world´s soybeans are used to create feed, but cultivation requires very large amounts of land and water. It has been estimated that one hectare of land can produce one tonne of soy per year; the same area can produce over 100 tonnes of insect protein. Meanwhile, aquaculture consumes 10% of the world´s fish production as feed for other fish, as a commodity, fishmeal has been subject to significant Price volatility over the last 15-25 years, rising from $500 per tonne in the 1990s to over $2000 per tonne between 2012-14.
