Description:
This company is a spin-off from the University and the Spanish Council for Scientific Research. Spanish SME plant Biotech Company specialized in the development and scaling of new processes for production and purification of proteins (industrial, nutraceutial and therapeutic proteins) and other biomolecules from plant material, has a technology package to produce biomolecules of interest from the artichoke by-products of the canning industry.

The company has a technology package to produce biomolecules of interest from the artichoke by-products of the canning industry. This package includes: Design of production lines at industrial level, extraction and purification procedures of four different products as well as economic viability and marketing studies.

The by-products from artichoke processing industries are very rich in bioactive substances. The company has developed the necessary technology for the extraction and purification of proteins and other bio-molecules from by-products or wastes of the artichokes, using for it physical processes. These biomolecules have application on food, cosmetic and pharma sectors.

Obtained products:

- Inulin: is a polysaccharide resistant to hydrolysis by human digestive enzymes; therefore it reaches intact the end of the human gut where it is metabolized by the bifidobacteria present in the gut.

- Flour: Artichoke´s tissue boiled and dried is very rich in fiber. Depending on its final use it could be blended with other plant flours and/or products.

- Phenolic extract: The Company has conducted several studies to identify and quantify polyphenolic compounds acting as natural antioxidants, therefore they have the know-how required to design ingredients for functional foods based on these compounds.

- Peroxidase: is an enzyme widely used in clinical biochemistry. This enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of a wide number of organic and inorganic substrates by means of the oxidizing power of hydrogen peroxide.

Besides the company can obtain vegetal rennet from artichocke´s flower which could be an alternative to the one extracted from cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) that has been used to produce some sheep cheese traditional varieties both Spanish and Portuguese.

The company has the necessary knowledge and resources to study any agrifood residue and to develop the extraction and purification procedures of the biomolecules of interest.

The company offers this technology for acquisition. Besides, they offer support to transfer the technology and are interested in commercial agreement with technical assistance
