Flow controllers are usually active systems and passive valves exhibit a lack of precision.
A new type of passive valve able to deliver a constant flow rate independently of inlet pressure changes has been designed and tested. The Swiss high-tech company succeeded to create a passive valve able to handle water, other liquids or gas.

The valve, which comprises a hollow cylinder, a piston engraved with a helical groove, a spring and two fluidic connectors, is adapted by design to high pressures and high flow rates. It has been shown that this technology is also suitable for the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid at 20 mL/h from the brain ventricles to the peritoneal cavity. To that end, a valve in titanium has been machined and tested at very low pressure using water.

Flow rate accuracy within +/-10% has been demonstrated. The device is a hollow cylinder of 2 cm long and 0.6 cm in diameter, with a piston of 4 mm in diameter. The device dimensions can be tailored to the final application.
The typical flow rate varies from 0.1 L/min to 7.5 L/min or more. The inlet pressure range can be as large as few mbar to 15 bar, the spring stiffness being simply adjusted to match the expected variation of pressure.

Any application that requires a constant flow rate of liquid or gas could be interested in using this device.

The Swiss high-tech company is seeking partners, e.g. in the field of industrial systems (shower apparatus, brake system in automotive, CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) equipment (semiconductor industry), fuel cells, pneumatic system or any other industries where high performances are expected, e.g. energy sector (gas burner), which are interested in licensing the system, in collaborating to further develop the technology to be used in various products and in commercializing them.
