Description:
A research group from the department of architecture of a Spanish university has developed a novel ventilated facade solution. This solution incorporates a continuous folded sheet in an intermediate position that acts as a structural element of the facade by forming ribs on both of its sides.

The continuity of the sheet supplies mechanical continuity and protects the inner layers of the facade, especially in case of extreme climatic events, such as strong winds or earthquakes.

The ribs of the sheet, which are produced by vertical folding of a continuous sheet, are made on both of its sides, following a modulation that can either be the same or different in each side.

The ribs on the inner face of the facade increase its rigidity and transfer the loads applied to the facade, gravitational and horizontal, to the structure by discrete fastenings directly to the floor slabs.

The outer ribs allow the placement of the external finishing material of the facade either by means of fixing elements or by horizontal linear elements fixed mechanically to the outer ribs, forming a ventilated chamber.

In addition, the gap between the inner and outer ribs is used to place an insulating material on both sides of the sheet, being advisable that the insulation in the interior has a hot face vapor barrier to reduce the risk of interstitial condensations. Thermal bridges are avoided, as the inner and outer ribs do not coincide.

On the other hand, the joints between sheets by the overlap of two or more sheets at the ribs and therefore can be fastened by the side of the ribs to the fixing points to the floor slab by means of mechanical fastenings.

Finally, the overall mechanical stiffness of the facade is improved with this ventilated system as a result of the inclusion of the folded sheet, increasing the mechanical resistance of the assembly against horizontal actions, especially those produced by extreme climate events, such as strong winds, earthquakes or other, increasing the post-event resilience of the facade.

The continuity of the sheet will avoid that a fastening failure means the collapse of the facade due to loss of mechanical capacity.

The group looks for companies in the building sector and manufacturers of façade systems to sign technical cooperation agreements for the development of new façade systems, commercial agreements with technical assistance in order to implement new façade system´s prototypes and patent licensing agreements based on the actual patents held by the group.
Advantages and Innovations:
In existing solutions, there was a need to incorporate a structural frame that would hold the facade. With the new solution, the folded sheet does this structural function.

In addition, the invention improves existing solutions in other aspects such as:

- The other facade elements can be fixed directly to the folded sheet.

- It allows to establish a modulation to the interior equal or different from the one of the exterior.

- It improves the overall performance of the facade and increases resilience during and after extreme events linked to the effect of water or external horizontal forces, such as those produced by strong winds, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

Nothing has been found in patent databases or in the scientific literature consulted.

- The invention does not require a structural frame, since the folded sheet forming ribs on both sides of the sheet endows the facade with mechanical stiffness giving the system the ability to transfer mechanical loads without the need of a specific structure.

- Regarding the construction procedure of the facade, it facilitates the redesign of the facade regarding the structure of the building, since it allows the adjustment at the fixing points both in height and in the direction perpendicular to the facade by means of mechanical joints arranged in the side of the rib.

- The fixing system only requires adjusters in the horizontal direction contained in the facade plane, rather than the three-dimensional adjusting systems required in conventional frame ventilated facades.

- Technical difficulty and reasonable implementation costs.
