Background:
The wire for saddle stitching is on rolls. Then the string is bent and cut to the appropriate size in the stitching machine before stitching the product, for example a brochure.

The Swiss company is able to provide cradle to cradle-certified (C2C / circular economy related) printing products. Meaning that all substances used in the product are biodegradable in a safe way, except one: the stitching wire.

Biodegradable wire:
The stitching wire for binding brochures is made out of a metal alloy that is not biodegradable. This wire should also be biodegradable.
They look for a wire material that will work in the existing machine. It should be flexible in order to be bent but also hard in order not to tear.

Market:
Until now, there are 3 printing companies within Europe that would demand this product. They are convinced that the cradle to cradle concept (and circular economy) will spread out within the printing industry. So, the first company that would be able to deliver a product for this challenge will lead the market.
A similar product is used for packaging carton. Here it could also be a market for cradle to cradle designed products.
