Looking for SMEs to develop a 3 dimensional scanning ceilometer for aviation
A Greek SME with great expertise in light detection and ranging technology (LIDAR) is developing a 3 dimensional scanning ceilometer for airports that uses laser to determine the height of clouds base under various conditions. The data derived from the scattered laser beam in the atmosphere, are analyzed and information about the clouds heights is retrieved. The company is looking for SMEs with expertise in laser photodetectors and data analytics for technical cooperation agreement.
Nowadays, the use of ceilometers in aviation is very common, since they represent the standard method for measuring the cloud base height at several airports. Ceilometers are devices that use a laser, as a light source to determine the height of clouds base and detect fog under various conditions. The data derived from the scattered laser beam in the atmosphere, are analyzed in a friendly graphical user interface so that information about the clouds heights is retrieved.

However, existing systems placed in airports are often of low power and specifications, capable to detect only at vertical position. In this case, each airplane runway needs more than one ceilometer and consequently the airport needs a large number of ceilometers. This means extra costs and technical difficulty in data integration taking on account all airport lanes.

Currently, the greek SME is developing a new 3 dimensional scanning system that goes beyond the above mentioned problems, since is capable to perform measurements at three dimensions. In this way, a single system (or maximum two) is capable to cover the needs for each airport. The system includes the following features and advantages:

- Detection of cloud base and fog at three dimensions because of the advanced scanning capabilities
- Detection at large distances because of the sophisticated combination of high-power laser source and big telescope (compared with the competitors)
- Fully automated through measurement scheduling software, including 3D scanning systems which can be programmed with multiple scan patterns
- Eye-safe system based on sophisticated combination of the laser source and the optical transmission system
- Applied technology relies on the existing know-how of the company (over 14 years) to LIDAR (light detection and ranging technology) products for atmospheric analysis

The company seeks SMEs with expertise in laser technology for the development and manufacturing of the photo-detection part of the hardware, as well as SMEs active in software development to undertake the development of the software for the analysis of the collected date.
