Improvement in dietary supplements for treatment of lactose intolerance
Summary:
An Italian biotech company developed a food supplement for the treatment of lactose intolerance which contains the enzyme lactase and a high number of tindalized microorganisms of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum, able to produce further quantity of lactase. The company is interested in research or technical collaboration agreements with public or private research centers, universities and pharmaceutical companies who can contribute to further development of this product.
Description:
Overall approximately 75% of world population is affected by lactose intolerance. Typically, the human body produces the enzyme lactase, which helps digest the sugar found in milk (lactose). People who are lactose intolerant do not produce a sufficient quantity of lactase. In many cases, individuals can reach a stage of real intolerance which gastro-intestinal complaints. It is now ongoing a new area of research concerning the use of specific bacteria.

In this context, an Italian biotechnology company developed a new nutritional supplement for lactose intolerance, aiming ai overcoming the discomfort faced by individuals who have trouble digesting the lactose in milk and its derivatives.

The product created is a food supplement which contains the enzyme lactase and tindalized microorganisms of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum, that are able to produce further quantity of lactase.

In particular, the Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic microorganism specially strong, capable of reducing lactose intolerance caused by deficiency of the enzyme lactase, producing itself significant amounts of this enzyme and thus helping to completely digest lactose. This microorganism possesses multiple qualities: assists in the production of key enzymes, and increases the rate at which vitamins, such as Vitamine B, and calcium, lactase and fatty acids are adsorbed.

Lactobacillus plantarum has been shown to be an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn´s disease, and colitis. It has the ability to destroy pathogens and to preserve critical nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. It has also shown the rare ability to produce L lysine, a beneficial amino acid. One of the most interesting uses for Lactobacillus plantarum involves using it to deliver therapeutic compounds and proteins to the body.

The nutrition supplement is gluten free and contains only natural enzymes. The main advantage is that this product is particularly rich in probiotics, compared to other existing supplements on the market.

The company is looking for public or private research centers, universities and pharmaceutical companies, interested in research or technical collaboration agreements in order to improve the product and to adapt to the specific needs (i.e. production neeeds, new products, etc.).
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The Italian biotechnology company is looking for partners specialized in lactose intolerance advanced studies.
Public and private research centres, universities and pharmaceutical companies interested in taking part of the study and further exploit research results are sought.
The objective of the company is a research or technical collaboration aimed to find new or useful approaches for improving the product, for example in terms of quality and quantity of lactase enzyme, in order to obtain more efficacy and potency of the product.
