Summary:
A US-based industrial gas company is seeking novel ways of using helium to generate value in new and/or existing processes through improvements in efficiency or throughput, or to reduce a process´ environmental footprint. The sponsor seeks to identify new, commercially viable applications that will help to expand the global market for helium and to enter a technical or research cooperation agreement including a cash prize.
Description:
The deadline to respond to this contest is January 14, 2016 at 5 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). Expressions of Interest (EoIs) submitted through the EEN do not count as entries to the contest. Full entries will require additional time and further instructions, which will be furnished upon submission of EoI. EoI deadline is January 7, 2016 to allow time for preparation of a complete entry.

Helium is a non-renewable resource that is used in a wide array of applications, across a wide array of industries. The goal of this contest and the subsequent technical or research cooperation agreement is to expand the global market for helium through the development of new applications. These applications might include the substitution of helium in existing processes and products that would benefit from helium´s properties, or the development of new applications that take advantage of those properties. This is consistent with the company´s mission to improve the economic and environmental performance of customer processes around the world. The sponsor has recycle technology that can improve the economics of proposed processes requiring large volumes of helium.

Participants in this competition vie for at least three US$30,000 cash prizes and may have the opportunity to collaborate with the sponsor to develop proposed solutions. A minimum of five semi-finalists will be selected. Semi-finalists will present their proposals in person to the sponsor´s technical and business development review panel. Cash prizes of US$30,000 each will be awarded to a minimum of three respondents for top-ranked proposals.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
Successful technologies will use helium in any form (gas, liquid, or plasma) and will take advantage of one or more of helium´s unique properties:
¿ low boiling point
¿ inertness
¿ low density
¿ low viscosity
¿ high thermal conductivity
¿ low atomic mass
¿ small atomic radius
¿ high diffusion rate
¿ high speed of sound
¿ high ionization energy
¿ low solubility

Processes or technologies with a beneficial and well-defined value proposition are preferred, but there is also a strong interest in highly innovative approaches that may currently have less supporting evidence.

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
¿ Any process that yields a high value product through the use of helium
¿ Conversion of an existing process to use helium instead of a different gas, cryogenic fluid, or plasma
¿ Direct use of helium to produce a product
¿ Any service or process that is enabled by helium´s unique properties

The following approaches are not of interest:
¿ Approaches that do not demonstrate some benefit (performance-related, economic, efficiency, environmental) from the use of helium

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
Responses from companies (small to large), academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs or inventors are welcome.

Appropriate responses will use the response form (provided after submission of EoI) and address the following:
¿ Technical maturity of the approach.
¿ Description of proposed application and its technical feasibility.
¿ Discussion of the potential business opportunity.
¿ Potential annual helium consumption when implemented at a commercial scale.
¿ Comparison of proposed helium application against existing technologies with regard to the value that helium use provides (where applicable)

The completed document will serve as an introduction to the respondent´s proposed approach and expertise, and should include scientific rationale to support the approach´s technical feasibility as well as a discussion of the value proposition the approach offers.

The sponsor will select a minimum of 5 respondents as semi-finalists. These semi-finalists will each discuss their proposal directly with the sponsor´s technical and business development review panel. This review panel will select least 3 of the semi-finalists to each receive a US$30,000 cash prize.

There may be funded development opportunities for some of the awarded technologies.
