The German SME has developed microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip systems for point-of-need applications and is now trying to extend its product and application portfolio by searching for partners whose biosensor(s) should be transferred into a Lab-on-a-Chip environment.

Various biosensing solutions have been developed by research institutes and companies throughout the last decades. Most of them require a certain sequence of liquid delivery, e.g. for referencing and labelling. Usually this is done by external pumps and tubing attached to a flow cell mounted on the sensor.
For (portable) point-of-need applications, however, it may be desirable to integrate such biosensors in a self-contained microfluidic cartridge.

The company therefore provides standard evaluation platforms to quickly start integrating biosensors and associated
assays into a miniaturized, self-contained cartridge format.

The cartridge technology hereby allows for liquid movement inside such a cartridge to perform the assay and "feed" the biosensor, thus not requiring any external pumping or pipetting steps. Besides such integrated pumping, the cartridges may also include the ability for integrated heating (e.g. for hybridization, lysis or amplification).

Besides the pure microfluidic cartridges, required electronics and software solutions to run the cartridges, as well as accessories such as micro-structured adhesive tapes for bonding the sensor to the microfluidics part are available.

The company is looking for partners who have developed a biosensor solution and who wish to integrate and test their sensor in a self-contained miniaturized microfluidic environment. The partners should be interested in, depending on the necessary cooperation, either technical collaboration agreements or R-Y-D collaboration agreements. Optional the company can market the biosensor as it is and/or integrated in the microfluidic environment or vice versa the partner can market its sensor together with the customised cartridge.

The partner should have expertise in biosensing and assay development and provide a biosensor solution he wants to transfer to a miniaturized system. The application scenarios of interest include not only human and veterinary diagnostics, but also food safety, environmental analyses, and pure RnD settings.

Industrial partners (SME and medium sized enterprises up to 500 employees) as well as research partners (universities, research institutes) are sought.
The partner should have expertise in biosensing and assay development and provide a biosensor solution he wants to transfer to a miniaturized system. The application scenarios of interest include not only human and veterinary diagnostics, but also food safety, environmental analyses, and pure R-Y-D settings.
The type of collaboration - technical collaboration agreement or research cooperation agreement depend on of type and size of the partner and its ability and intention to participate in the transfer process. The partner can e.g. market its biosensor together with the customised cartridge delivered by the SME or can e.g. allow the SME to market the biosensor simply as it is and/or to market it integrated in the miniaturized system.
But be aware, the SME´s finally intention is not the integration and testing of conventional biosensors into self-contained miniaturized microfluidic environments but to collect application cases of conventional biosensors to qualify the integration and testing processes, to gain experiences in a wider field of applications and, finally, to check out possibilities to generate long-term business relationship(s) and to create some kind of baseload beyond R-Y-D. All this allows to discuss possible collaboration types not mentioned above.
