Details

Tittle:
Cooperation sought for drum roll embedded sensor development
Summary:
A French SME active in the sector of handling equipment is looking for competences in sensor development to characterize the materials and the dimensions of loads (boxes /packages) on a conveyor belt. The sensor will have to be embedded into the drum or roll used to power the belt. The company is interested by a technical cooperation agreement to develop these sensors.
Description:
The French SME is developing mechanical - electronical solutions to power and control handling equipment such as conveyors.
Nowadays, conveyor lines have multiple sensors which are attached to and spread along the line according to the kind of data they have to monitor. Load type recognition sensors already exist in the handling market. However, the recognition function is usually fulfilled thanks to a batch of sensors placed at strategic places on the conveyor line.

There are two main drawbacks for this system. First of all, sensors are subject to damages because of dust and dirt that accumulate on them. Secondly, these sensors all have to be wired together and also with a line control unit which creates another myriad of cables in the conveyor system.

With the continuous goal of reducing the number of wired and independant parts in handling machines, this company is eager to develop a new range of sensors which would be directly embedded into the drum or roll - the part used to drive the conveyor - and plugged into an already developed multi-purpose electronic card.

This sensor should be able to monitor the type of load (box/package) running through the conveyor, as well as the load dimensions and shape.

Because this would be a new alternative in the handling sector to existing solutions, the company is favouring discussion with public or private R-Y-D entities working on sensor development rather than with existing larger sensor manufacturers already having a range of handling/packaging sensors.

It is looking for a technical cooperation agreement with a public or private R-Y-D entity to develop the sensors.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The sensors will be embedded into handling rolls having a 50 mm diameter and length between 100 up to 1000 mm

The mass over the roll would be from 0,5 up to 50 kg
Linear speed of the conveyor is 10 to 60 m/ min possibly up to 120
Operational temperature ranges from -35°C to +5°C for external conveyors and 10 to 40 for internal conveyors.

The sensors should be able to detect the different type of materials used in the boxes/packages : wood, plastics, cardboard
The sensors should be able to provide
- box size
- box positionning
- box shape

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
Type : Public or private sensor research companies or organisation.
Field of activity : sensor development for packaging / handling solution
Preferably not a sensor manufacturer as this new technology would appear as competing with its own products.

Role : Cooperate to develop a sensor with the requested characteristics which could be installed within the drinving drum or roll of a conveyor.
