Manufacturing or technical cooperation agreements are sought.
Description:
A division of a UK SME specialises in producing ceramic shapes, one application of which is for ceramic body armour for the police and military. This involves the company supplying a shaped or curved ceramic plate backed with a composite material. The leading material to do this is currently an ultra-high molecular weight polythene (UHMWPE) fibre such as Dyneema® from Royal DSM or DuPont™ Tensylon™. The composite will need to be attached to the plate by heat treatment either by hot pressing or in an autoclave - the latter is preferred for higher volumes.

This composite covering is essential to the ballistic characteristics of the armoured plate as the composite helps absorb energy and keeps ceramic fragments from penetrating the body.

The company seeks industrial organisations with the capability of carrying out such a process under a manufacturing agreement. Consideration will also be given to collaborating to enhance their in house manufacturing capability via a technical cooperation agreement.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The SME requires a company with the capability of applying such a UHMWPE fibre composite material or equivalent on a ceramic plate by heat treatment, either by hot pressing or in an autoclave depending on the volumes required. The material thickness will vary depending on the ballistic requirements, but may be 10 mm thick with a 1 mm coating on the front and sides. The plates are variable in size but typically 300x200 mm, and they are also curved and so the ability to work with non-flat shapes is essential.

In the first instance the minimum requirement is someone capable of carrying out this manufacturing process at potential high volumes - up to 1,000 plates per month. Depending on the success and volumes, a collaboration of technology assistance may be appropriate allowing the SME to bond a proportion of the plates in house. The work may be variable with some months busy and others quiet.

The company is looking for an industrial partner that can carry out the composite covering work under a manufacturing agreement, but will also consider the transfer of the technology under a technical cooperation agreement to enable in house production.

The partner should have experience of heat application of composites to shapes, not necessarily ceramic or armour, but a similar application would be advantageous. An autoclave would be the best way to apply the composite due to the high volumes envisaged, although a hot press would also be suitable.
