Summary:
A UK company has developed an innovative eye retina imaging technology, enabling healthcare professionals to provide a diagnostic for patients in remote areas. It is planning to participate in the UK and Indian government´s Newton funding competition "Technology solutions for society in India" and is looking for Indian partners working in medical software integration or a private hospital under technology cooperation and commercial agreement to integrate the technology into medical centers.
Description:
Estimations of blindness in India by the World Health Organization in 2012 showed 11.2% of the population suffering from preventable blindness with more than 2 million new cases expected each year. India´s eye care professionals are overwhelmed with the astronomical number of patients. Nearly 70% of India´s population resides in rural areas, and only around 10,000 ophthalmologists are responsible for the care of the entire population.

A UK company, with the help of a UK university, has developed a digital retina imaging technology which enables healthcare professionals to remotely examine, analyse and annotate medical images from patients in rural areas and provide a low cost image based diagnostic for further care. The software uses a simple, low cost and secure cloud-base infrastructure for medical image management that enables the healthcare professional to remotely annotate images, manage image sets and report diagnoses and other outcomes. This technology helps with the detection and management of diseases that can damage the patient eye and general health such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and hypertension.

The UK company is planning to apply for UK government´s funding competition "Technology solutions for society in India". The project aims at streamlining the management, analysis and reporting of fundus images (photos of the back of the eye) to save healthcare costs and extend the reach of eye care in India and especially in the remote parts of the country. The projects is expected to range in size from total costs of £350,000 to £450,000 in the UK. Indian companies have received funding in line of 12,250,000 Indian rupees from the Indian government for such projects in the past. The project should last between 12 and 24 months.

The company has already won a UK government funding competition with the technology.
