Description:
A UK-based SME operating in the over the counter healthcare sector has an active product development pipeline. This pipeline includes the development and formulation of actives delivered using microspheres in the oral cavity and upper airway. This method of delivery faces challenges in the form of the secretions produced in the oral cavity, the presence of mucus covering oral tissue as well as penetration of the oral mucosal tissue itself.

The SME is therefore looking for an in vitro model of the oral cavity to examine the penetration of their active-containing microspheres through the mucus layer and the into the oral tissue. This model should replicate as accurately as possible the conditions and tissue of the oral cavity and upper airway. In particular it should accurately replicate the epithelial layers of the oral mucosal tissue and its associated mucus coating. The model should also replicate oral secretions especially in terms of chemical composition.

The model should allow for the measurement of the penetration of the microspheres into the mucus coating and into the oral tissue. Ideally the model should enable multiple measurements to be taken over a time period.

The SME envisages the relationship to be with either an industrial partner or with a university or research institution. The partnership is expected to take the form of a commercial agreement where the partner provides access to and use of the in vitro model. The partner should also provide a degree of technical assistance regarding the use of the model to overcome any experimental design and implementation challenges encountered during the research programme.

The model sought should replicate the oral cavity and upper airway as accurately as possible, in particular the oral mucosal tissue.

The model should also accurately replicate the secretions of the oral cavity and upper airway in terms of amount and chemical composition. The model should also be able to replicate the mucus layer on the oral tissue in terms of consistency and chemical composition.

The model should also allow for measurement of passage of active substances across the mucus layer and into the mucosal tissue. Ideally it should allow for measurements to be taken at different time points during the experiment.

The SME is not interested in animal models.
