Description:
A Finnish SME, established in 2019, is developing a technology for refining ingredients from marine biomass (especially from blue-green algae) for use in the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharma industries. The company is looking for technology for harvesting green blue-algae from oceans.

Sea and ocean grown biomass such as algae, bladder-wrack and kelp include substances which can be used as ingredients in several industries. On the other hand, eutrophication caused by nutrient loading and blue-green algae is a big problem in some areas like in the Baltic Sea. The Finnish SME has a target both to solve this environmental problem and exploit the biomass sustainably.

The piloting area for this will be the Baltic Sea, for which research shows:
- The estimated amount of blue-green algae blooms in the Baltic Sea is ~400.000 metric tons per annum
- In average the blue-green algae bloom season is 84 days per season
- Typically the peak of the bloom happens in the middle of July in the coastal waters of Finland
- The Baltic Sea water type is brackish water
- The Finnish archipelago is broken into a huge amount of smaller islands, straits, bays and shallow waters.

The annual collection target is 100.000 metric tons, this is roughly on average ~1200 tons/day, 50 tons/h for 24 hours/day for 84 days.

The technology should be, among other things, scalable, modular and eco-friendly and it should be able to operate in narrow straits and shallow waters or in open seas. It also should be transportable on a sea freight cargo deck and the physical size of the approach should not exceed the starndard shipping container dimensions.

The Finnish SME is looking for cooperation under license agreement or technical cooperation agreement.

The company is seeking harvesting technology that is desired to be:
-Scalable
-Modular, so that multiples of the same system can operate as a larger entity
-Energy efficient
-Having a low CO2 footprint
-Able to operate in narrow straits and shallow waters or in open seas (Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea, or Gulf of Mexico)
-Transportable on a sea freight ship cargo deck, using standardized shipping container fixation points
-Physical size of any vessel or structure based approach should not exceed the standard shipping container dimensions.

-Using some type of biological flocculant type of liquid to improve the harvesting efficiency

The annual collection target is 100.000 metric tons, this is roughly on average ~1200 tons/day, 50 tons/h for 24 h/day for 84 days.

In order to allow for an efficient harvesting process it is foreseen that the blue-green algae harvesters will perform the most relevant duty, harvesting blue-green algaes 24/7. This will mean that the harvested blue-green algae biomass will be transferred from the harvester´s harvest container to a midterm storage barge/platform or ship. The midterm storage barge/platform or ship´s storage containers will then be transferred to a larger transport ship for taking the harvested blue-green algae to the biorefinery´s biomass storage facilities.

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The company is looking for partners that have solutions/systems/methods for the harvesting of blue-green algae from the oceans. The harvested blue-green algae will be used by the company in their neo-ecology biorefinery plant. The partner sought does not need to have the complete system for harvesting, when the company is also interested for solutions that will solve some part of the problem in question.

The partner sought can represent either an SME or a research facility/university. The specific area the partner is sought for is harvesting algae.

The expected partnership model is license agreement or technical cooperation agreement.
