Description:
The Greek company is a chemistry analysis laboratory which performs analysis in grape musts, wines and spirits made by distillation. Also, the company provides scientific support on winemaking processes such as recommendations on winemaking technics, products for winemaking and guidance through the whole winemaking period e.g. from choosing the right time to begin grape harvesting, fermentation monitoring, stability tests for the bottling, etc.

Since 2013, when they were founded, they have had an established clientele including wine makers and other alcoholic beverages producers. Apart from conventional chemical analysis, they want to provide high added value services to their customers by addressing significant issues with respect to drink quality.
As it has been identified, one of the common problems for distillers and beverages producers are substances known as phthalates. These are organic substances and endocrine disruptors used mainly as plasticizers in plastics to increase their durability, flexibility and longevity. Scientific studies demonstrate that phthalates are present in the living environment, in food and drink packaging (paper, plastics, cellophane, aluminum foil and jar lids) wherefrom, by migration, they may contaminate food and drink. Their presence in spirits comes from the fact that producers use plastic containers in order to transfer or sell their products. Therefore, through drink ingestion, the human body may be exposed on:

· long-term exposure to low levels of phthalates (chronic) causing male infertility, kidney and liver disorders, endocrine or potentially carcinogenic diseases;
· short-term exposure to high levels of phthalates (acute) causing effects on the gastrointestinal system, dizziness or nausea.

Based on these findings, a determination analysis of those endocrine disrupters is critical in order to limit the phthalates contamination of drinks and respect spirit drink safety legislation. The Greek company is looking for new mature methods or techniques that allow for rapid and accurate determination of phthalates in spirits made specifically by distillation of wine in order to determine their presence in tsipouro and ouzo.

The ideal solution would be an analyzer that can perform rapid or instant analysis on the sample giving accurate information whether a sample is contaminated or not with phthalates. It can also be useful to provide a rapid result of spirit after having been put in plastic containers or pipes in order to transfer product into other containers or take it into a bottling line. It should be mentioned that phthalates free pipes are available in the market but they cost much more than the usual pipes.

By using the requested technology, the Greek company is being able to provide advanced and differentiated services to their clients (winemakers and distillers) compared to other laboratories and to be one step ahead of the current competition.
