Un laboratorio de investigación bávaro para biomateriales dentales está trabajando actualmente en un proyecto para mejorar cementos dentales de ionómero de vidrio. Los objetivos del proyecto son 1) mejorar el componente orgánico (ácido poliacrílico) e inorgánico (ionómero de vidrio) y 2) mejorar los parámetros de procesamiento. El último fin es desarrollar un producto patentable. Se buscan socios industriales potenciales con experiencia en química y síntesis de ácidos poliacrílicos o produccion de ionómeros de vidrio para establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica o investigación.

They are looking for potential industrial partners who hold expertise in either the chemical background and synthesis of polyacrylic acids and/or the production of the glassionomer glasses. They want to enter into a technical and/or research cooperation agreement.
Description:
A Research Laboratory for dental biomaterials of a Bavarian University is currently working on a project to improve dental glassionomer cements (GIC).

GICs are currently the only biocompatible alternative to amalgam as a comparably cheap restoration material. GICs are marketed for almost 50 years but with only little improvement from the inital formulation. They are currently used in dentistry for temporary fillings or in pediatric and geriatric dentistry. Within the last decade - supported by the toxicity discussion upon amalgam - the efforts have been increased in order to optimise this formulation. GICs are lacking sufficient mechanical Performance (strength, toughness, wear resistance) in order to fulfill the ISO criteria for a permanent filling material.

Insufficient strength, toughness and wear resistance need to be overcome to present a durable, permanent alternative to amalgam. Considering a real, affordable replacement of amalgam, the economical potential would be outstanding.

The Laboratory is currently preparing a project with the following goals: First, to improve the organic component (polyacrylic acid) as well as the inorganic glass component (metastable glassionomer glass). Second, to improve the processing parameters. The overall objective is to develop a patentable product.
