Summary:
A Dutch SME has a leading role in developing a Social Digital Assistant (SDA) as an effective and efficient approach towards the prevention of loneliness. They are looking for partners with expertise in the field of conversation technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning to further develop the SDA within the frame of a research cooperation agreement or technical cooperation agreement. This request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open innovation platform.
Description:
The Dutch SME has been established by a group of social entrepreneurs active in care and welfare. They have taken a leading role in developing a new and more effective and efficient approach towards the prevention of loneliness in their region.
Loneliness takes many guises and can eventually lead to health problems or worse. Physical and psychological complaints, such as depression, alcohol addiction and sleeping problems can be caused by chronic loneliness. In addition, loneliness increases the risk of premature death. People aged 75 and over, young people between 15 and 24 years old, divorced people, people with a disability or psychiatric background, homeless people and carers are at extra risk. Loneliness is an important social issue for many municipalities.

Digital assistant concept
The core of the new approach is a Social Digital Assistant (SDA) that helps people to maintain control and initiative in their own lives and well-being.
The SDA can lead to involvement and recovery of relationships in one´s own informal and social (family) network. The SDA decreases the demand for voluntary and professional help, care and support.
The SDA offers a combination of empathetic conversations through technological innovation and meaningful human interaction and attention. It leads to an improvement in psychological health by reducing the feeling of loneliness and maintaining control. The approach prevents users from feeling lonely and causing health problems. Requests for help and / or support are identified in a timely manner, so that help and support can be offered early and easily. This prevents problems from escalating and requiring more or specialist help.

The concept of the SDA was developed in a partnership between a welfare organization, a Dutch University of Applied Sciences and the SME. Together they have extensive knowledge and experience of important issues in care and welfare, innovation in care, sustainable care and the application of technology in society.
In the further development of the SDA, the network of the aforementioned cooperation partners would like to collaborate with other partners with expertise in the field of conversation technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
This would provide the network of cooperation partners with the expertise required for further development and for investigating the application of the digital assistant in various sectors of care and welfare.
The SME is looking for a cooperation within the frame of a research cooperation agreement or technical cooperation agreement but other forms of cooperation may also be considered.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology request is part of an innovation challenge and is published on an open innovation platform until 30-th of November.
