UK SME requires supply of temperature sensitive materials for a new range of temperature sensor applications
Summary:
A UK SME requires a temperature sensitive material that changes its electrical characteristics repeatedly with temperature variation. The material is required to operate over a range of temperatures, be stable from T (°C) 0-100, be easily formed or extruded, and be RoHS compliant (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances).
The UK company seeks a commercial agreement to supply, and is also open to a potential joint venture / research phase to consider a suitable material.
Description:
A UK company from north east England specialised in the design and development of electronics and sensors for industry, particularly the offshore, process industry, fire protection and defense sectors, is looking to source a material for use in a new range of temperature sensors that can be used for fire detection and industrial instrumentation applications.

The company is looking for a source of material that changes its electrical state in a repeatable way with temperature. It is possible that the capacitance or resistance of the material will be the changing parameter.

Ideally the material will be capable of being electrically excited in a way so as to provide a reference signal that is not temperature dependent, however this is not vital.

The material will need to be formed in to the shape of the sensor so that an electrical signal can be applied to it.

The widest temperature range possible is desired but at least, the material should be stable from T (°C) 0-100. Higher range temperatures such as those provided by flouropolymers are a distinct advantage.

Although temperature sensitive materials are not novel, many materials that could be used for temperature sensing are now banned by the EU´s RoHS directive.

This is a mass market application, expecting use to exceed 10 years with a suitable material.

Expensive and exotic materials are unlikely to be suitable.

Materials should not be combustible in air at less than 150°C and ideally should not create dangerous products when burnt.

The UK company would prefer to have a ´commercial agreement to supply´ in place. However would be open to a potential joint venture / research phase to consider a suitable material.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
Industry or academia
Ideally, the respondents should be commercial organisations with the appropriate expertise and capacity to either:

1. supply the material under a ´commercial agreement´.
(preference)

2. or be open to a potential joint venture / research phase to consider a suitable material.

Responses are also sought from research organisations capable of identifying the source of the required material.
