Summary:
An international manufacturer of consumer comfort products (with a European headquarters in Austria) is looking for a technology that will increase the thermal conductivity of leather. The inherent insulation properties of leather limit potential new applications. Therefore a partner offering a technical solution which has already passed the proof of concept is sought. A wide variety of partnerships including joint development, technology licensing and purchasing agreements will be considered.
Description:
This international manufacturer - with a European headquarters in Austria - has significant expertise in the integration of technical systems and is a leading consumer of leather. The company seeks a method to increase the thermal conductivity of leather, to enable the development of a product which will improve the personal comfort of an individual through the regulation of temperature.

Leather is a natural thermal insulator and as such cannot be used in a desired new application. The technology sought would improve the thermal performance of the leather and open up new market opportunities for this product. State of the art solutions do not fulfil the desired functions completely. Perforations are currently used in the industry to improve thermal conductivity, but this is not of interest. Another important factor is to preserve the look, feel and durability of the leather.

Solutions are sought which are of Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 or above, i.e. solutions which have already passed the proof of concept. The company's main focus is on finding a perfect match in terms of the technology. They are open to cooperating with partners in developing a suitable solution or in purchasing the licence for an existing solution. In addition, a financial agreement is also possible. If the technical fit is right, the company would also be willing to discuss other forms of cooperation . All kinds of partners will be considered.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
· Final product isotropic coefficient of thermal conductivity: K > 2 W/m*K (dry leather) - leather typically has thermal conductivity of ~0.14W/m*K (dry leather)
· Overall surface size: 400mm x 400mm
· Start with leather having thickness between 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm
· Must not affect the tactile feel, hand, appearance, or durability of the leather
· Solutions that will work with non perforated leather preferred
· Cost target of < $10 additional per square meter at an annual volume of 1,000,000 pieces.
· TRL level of 3 or higher. The concept must have some scientific backing that the approach would be effective.

The preferred partner should have intimate knowledge of leather manufacturing methods as well as a clear understanding of thermal conductivity.
