Summary:
A Dutch international engineering and project management consultancy is looking for new technologies to selectively remove heavy metals from waste activated sludge in order to recover resources safely and/or more efficiently.
Cooperation is envisaged within the frame of a license agreement or a technical cooperation agreement. Other types of agreement may be considered. This request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open innovation platform.
Description:
A Dutch independent international engineering and project management consultancy is looking for technological expertise to selectively remove heavy metals from municipal waste activated sludge (WAS) derived from municipal wastewater.

Why is this a challenge?
Waste activated sludge (WAS) is a source of nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium) and biomass (cellulose, biopolymers) which potentially can be recovered and reused in agriculture or other markets. However, WAS contains heavy metals like copper, zinc, nickel, among other pollutants, which might hinder safe application of recovered resources. Removal of these heavy metals will open the door for resource recovery from sludge.

Where do you fit in?
The Dutch Water Authorities are cooperating in a platform called "Energy and Resource Factory". Within this platform different promising resources are investigated for recovery from municipal wastewater and WAS, i.e. water, phosphorus, bioplastics, biopolymers and cellulose. The potential partner can add to this cooperation by delivering specific technological expertise to selectively remove heavy metals from municipal WAS.

If the technology fits into the above-mentioned goal, the Dutch corporate would like to get in touch and investigate the technical and economic feasibility.
If the investigation confirms that application of this technology can enhance resource recovery from WAS, a pilot test at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) will be a logical next step.
Cooperation is envisaged within the frame of a license agreement or a technical cooperation agreement. Other types of agreement may be considered.

What´s in it for you?
· Evaluation of the proposed technology in the context of wastewater treatment (business case)
· An assignment to realize a prototype or pilot
· Support and test environment
· Probability of a follow-up order, scaling up or lasting cooperation
· Interesting network of cooperation partners and municipalities, which can also be used to spread the partner´s concept further if it is demonstrably effective.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This technology request is part of an innovation challenge and is published on an open innovation platform until March 29th 2021. If an organisation does express interest in cooperation with this firm before closing date, it will be guided towards this open innovation platform on which one can get in touch with the company experts. Mind that posts on this platform are not confidential.
Beside open discussions on the platform, sharing of confidential information will be made possible on demand. After that, the firm will select the SME´s that will be invited for further contact to discuss cooperation possibilities aimed at the development of a solution . Once the challenge is closed, EOI´s for this technology request will be treated in the traditional way
