Description:
An Irish SME has developed an energy management system (prototype version). The SME is looking for system components to (design spec) with technical assistance along with the possibility of manufacturing capability/commercial partnership to establish a commercial size exemplar system.
The system which takes in energy, including from renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels, and uses this to satisfy demand. When generation outstrips demand, it generates hydrogen by means of electrolysis using an electrolyser. It then stores the hydrogen either as gas or bound to metal hydrides. Then it can dispense energy both as hydrogen gas, which is a fuel gas that can be used including in heating boilers and/or in internal combustion engines for transport, and/or used in a hydrogen fuel cell to deliver electricity on demand, including for transport.
Renewable energy sources are typically intermittent in nature, and not synchronised with the cycles in energy demand of a modern economy. This results in inefficiencies in the management of the national grid in particular. The full potential of renewable energy cannot be achieved without being linked with sufficiently sized and practical energy storage to reconcile generation with demand on an hourly, daily, weekly, and seasonal basis.
The market ready energy management system that will be available to prospective customers will be a plug-and-play system, simplifying the decision taking process regarding investment in renewable energy.
The size and storage capacity of each system can be scaled to suit the specific needs of the customer. One important attribute of the system is its versatility. It can be located in virtually any location, can be scaled to deliver from single watts to Mega Watts, and can deliver fuel gas and/or electricity.
Hydrogen is presently used in the oil refining and the ammonia industries, and other manufacturing processes. Presently hydrogen is predominantly generated from natural gas and therefore non-sustainable and has implications for greenhouse gas emissions. However, linking the system to renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels makes this hydrogen green and carbon free.
The green hydrogen generated by the system can also be combined with CO2 to produce green plastics and green methane. Hydrogen gas has a Wobbe Index (a value indicator of the interchangeability of fuel gases such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) etc) similar to natural gas and can therefore also be mixed with it to enrich it.
