Description:
A French engineering company specialized in recycling issues and creation of circular economy close-loop is facing a problem of repurposing glass fiber waste stem from industrial process. These fibers are considered as waste because they are not fitting with their classical standards, but can still be used on some product application in composite industry.

First step of glass fiber manufacturing process is the extrusion of molted glass through a bushing plate where the fibers are formed through multiple nozzles. Melt glass filaments showing some impurity or problems on process parameters lead to filament rupture. These broken filaments are then considered like glass fiber waste. These fibers have the same composition as E type glass (60% SiO2). Analyses made on these fibers waste have shown that they are not presenting heavy metal concentration higher than regulation threshold (inert waste). This is still continuous and long fibers, showing a diameter equal or slightly superior of normal glass fiber produced (about 10µm).

After extrusion step of glass fiber manufacturing process, when the fiber is drawn, several transformation steps are done (like sizing to protect the fiber, etc). Glass fiber waste is also generated during these different steps.

The French company is looking for laboratory or technical center which has already worked with glass fiber waste, especially specific study for the replacement of classical glass fiber (partial or complete) by glass fiber waste for their composite development. They are also interested in collaboration with a partner wanting to formulate a new composite with this kind of fiber and already having an idea of potential final client for the new composite developed.

In order to give more information to a potential final client, the company can propose the first kind of glass fiber waste between 7000t/year and 10000t/year. The second kind of glass fiber can be proposed between 3000t/year and 5000t/year. Fibers can be proposed as such or crushed, sieved if needed. The company can also propose to the final client the implementation of ad hoc processing tools to manage the glass fiber waste (crushing, sieving, drying, etc), according to the partner needs for the material preparation.
