H2020-FTI:Searching for manufacturers and other partners for the prevention of marine oil spill disastrous consequences
Summary:
Israeli SME in the field of oil spill response preparedness and immediate containment is looking for partners to apply to Fast Track to Innovation H2020 call. The SME aims to further develop the first immediate containment system to be installed on-board and prevent all spill sources from spreading and contaminating further. SME is looking for a boat manufacturer for further development, pod and cartridges manufacturers and oil spill responders for executing tests.
Description:
Marine oil spills cause major damages due to an unsolvable problem: there are no immediate containment systems on-board large ships and rigs. Hence, the oil slick spreads and splits over vast areas. Damages grow exponentially because oil spill responders´ operations cannot be effective because they come from afar or it takes them many hours of preparations before heading for the spill.
Now, prevention of disastrous spill consequences is finally attainable. The SME offers a technology to be further developed to a full system as the first solution for immediate oil spill containment. The system starts operating within minutes of spill detection. It simultaneously sets and deploys 2,000 meter of boom in 30 minutes (Boom - large floating barriers that round up oil and lift the oil off the water). The revolutionary T-Fence™ boom is the smallest and the lightest in the world. It weighs less than 1/15th of traditional booms and captures a fraction of the storage space.

By containing spills before they spread, this primary containment system will fundamentally alter the way organizations, policy makers and regulators prepare for - and respond to oil spills. The new technology makes it possible to pre-install a compact, easily deployable containment system at standby positions on board large ships, oil rigs and other high-risk locations (similar to sprinkler systems pre-installed in commercial buildings to stop fires). Just minutes after a spill is detected, the system will deploy 2,000 meters of boom to encircle and contain the spill, with no need for trained crews.

The complete system will be marketed:
Either as a complete booming system installed on-board a compact vessel, or a kit for installation on customers´ vessel of opportunity including original universal fitting parts.

The Israeli SME, previous winner on H2020, is the coordinator for this project. They have already partnered with a port as a beta-site to be launched in the Netherlands on Q1 of 2017. As well as the support of Oil specialized company.

The company would like to partner with:
* A manufacturer to build and develop a suitable vessel with universal fittings, according to the company´s instructions.
Needed expertise in the field of RIB (rigid-inflatable boat) or speed boats.

* The role of the second partner needed is to develop marine spec. class cases: cartridges and pods. They will be used for the protection and activation of the boom.
Needed expertise: sophisticated cases, MIL-STD etc.

*The SME is open to EOIs from other partners in the field of oil spills to join.

H2020 Call details:
Submission to Fast Track to Innovation pilot (FTI).
Deadline for EOIs: 1.10.2016
Deadline for submission to the call: 25.10.2016
Duration of project: tentative 24 months

Advantages and Innovations:
Main Innovation:

· Immediate oil spill containment system that starts operating within minutes of spill detection and simultaneously sets and deploys 2,000 meters of boom in 30 minutes.

Advantage:
· Improves the spill clean-up which requires less skimming, as the oil layer is much thicker and spread on a significantly smaller area; enables reduced quantities and increased effectiveness of toxic dispersants.
· Enables in-situ burning of spilled oil, which is only possible if the oil is concentrated.
Stage of Development:
Field tested/evaluated

Partner sought

Partner Sought:
The Israeli coordinator and their Netherlands partner, providing the beta site, are interested in finding partners * A manufacturer to build and develop a suitable vessel with universal fittings, according to the company´s instructions. Needed expertise in the field of RIB (rigid-inflatable boat) or speed boats. This should be a safe, compact, ocean grade vessel, that will be able to carry about 1,100 kg load + 2 operators. * The role of the second partner needed is to develop and/or manufacture marine spec. class cases: cartridges and pods. They will be used for the protection and activation of the boom. Needed expertise: The company would need expertise in developing equipment that would be sturdy, lightweight, not effected by UV, salty water, wave movements and temperature changes. *The SME is open to EOIs from other partners in the field of oil spills to join and offer their expertise. Such as oil spill responders for executing tests, engineering companies etc.
