Como beneficiaria del Instrumento pyme (fase 1), la empresa busca armadores y empresas especializadas en instalación de barcos interesadas en participar en la fase 2 dentro de la convocatoria H2020 SMEInst-10-2016-2017. El objetivo es instalar la turbina a bordo de un barco para generar electricidad extra (10%) aprovechando el calor y gases de escape de un motor a bordo. La fecha límite de la convocatoria es el 13 de octubre de 2016 y el plazo para presentar expresiones de interés finaliza el 15 de septiembre.

Summary:
A Dutch SME has developed an innovative compact turbine for recovery of waste heat into electricity. As a beneficiary of SME Instrument Phase 1, they are seeking ship owners, ship managers, ship yards and ship installation companies to join their Phase 2 project proposal under the call: H2020 SMEInst-10-2016-2017. The project goal is to integrate a skid including the green turbine on board of a vessel and generate 10% extra electricity, using the heat of flue gasses of an engine on board.
Description:
Greening of shipping is one of the most important challenges for the shipping sector, both from the aspect of environment and cost saving. New fuels and technologies such as Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and hybrid drivelines are applied more and more to make ship propulsion cleaner and more efficient. However, ship combustion engines still generate a lot of heat and there is no effective solution to recover this heat within the limited space available aboard.

This company has developed a (small scale) waste heat recovery system that is very compact and able to convert flue gasses of any engine into electricity by applying an innovative and patented turbine concept. The system can also be applied if steam is already available on board.

In the past few years a compact version (1,5 kilowatt, kW) of the turbine has been supplied to laboratories and tested extensively. More recently a 15 kW version has been developed and applied succesfully for heat recovery in the water sector. During SME Instrument Phase 1, the company conducted an extensive market research that focussed on the inland shipping and dredging market showing the economic feasibility of the technology.

The Dutch SME is now preparing a proposal for the H2020 SME Inst-10-2016-2017 Phase 2. The proposal in general will include a demonstration of a waste heat recovery skid on board of a vessel. Important activities of the project will be an indepth study of enviromental engineering issues with regards to the chosen vessel, the building and testing of a demonstration prototype and further optimalisation of the system following the test results. For this project ship owners, ship operators/managers, ship yards and maritime installation companies are sought.
