Description:
The R-Y-D institution was established in 1992, but has a long lasting tradition since the 1950s. The current research activities focus on the 3 big topics: energy, health and matter. One unique selling proposition of the institution are large-scale equipment and user facilities, which are utilized by researchers from the whole world. Now around 1.200 employees are working for the institution.

The focus on energy matter led to a new invention in the field of measurement of electrical parameters. The device is a 19" rack-mounted unit, operated and controlled via a PC and is primarily designed for automated scientific characterization measurements. The rack includes an integrated switching matrix and does not have any predefined connections, but provides 8 BNC [Bayonet Neill-Concelman] connection sockets, whose function (input or output) can be freely determined by the user.

The device then switches the functions internally. This enables measurements to be carried out with alternating connections of the contacts without having to combine several other devices. All functions can be completely controlled by a PC using proprietary control software. The software communicates via the TCP protocol, which allows the device to be integrated into any environment (Labview, C, Python, and other programs).

BNC connectors provide easy connectivity to many different measurement setups, such as cryostats, vacuum systems or probe stations. Up to eight different sample contacts can be connected to the instrument. The software offers presents for common measurement modes, but any user-specific switching sequences can also be easily specified. Thus, the device can be used to perform a number of different 4-wire measurements on complex sample layouts. Examples for measurement sequences are:

- Van-der-Pauw sheet resistance measurement on unstructured thin films;
- Zero-offset Hall measurement (exact separation of longitudinal and transverse resistance even with unstructured samples);
- Current pulses through a pair of contacts, then 4-wire measurement on other contacts;
- Alternating measurements on a "real" test structure and on a neighbouring dummy test structure to compensate for various interference effects.

Even for conventional 4-point measurements with fixed circuitry, the device offers low noise on par with lock-in amplifiers. In addition, any number of harmonics can be demodulated. The dynamic range of at 8 digits outclasses most lock-ins. Up to +/- 100mA or +/- 20 V can be output and pulses> 10µs or arbitrary signals can be generated. Several standard devices are interchangeable with the device and it replaces all standard devices such as lock-in amplifiers, source/measure units, digital multimeters or analogue matrix switches.

The R-Y-D institution is offering interested partners a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a licence agreement. The division of labour enables new partners to commercialise the invented device on a more effective level, then the research institution is able to.
Advantages and Innovations:
- The device enables a comprehensive electrical characterization of thin film and bulk samples on the basis of a 4-point geometry, such as the simultaneous measurement of sheet resistance and Hall resistance, van-der-Pauw measurements on unstructured thin film samples or zero-offset Hall effect measurements.
- Owing to its unique design the device provides exactly separated and absolute values for the longitudinal and transverse resistances of a sample simultaneously, even for irregular shapes that are not lithographically patterned.
- The usage of the device photolithography can be foregone in many characterization tasks, saving massive time and investment.
- The invention replaces all standard devices for electrical characterization measurements such as lock-in amplifiers, source/measure units, digital multimeters, analogue matrix switches.
- Despite using only half the number of switching configurations compared to the conventional van-der-Pauw -Y- Hall measurements, the full precision of the measured signal is restored by post calculation within the device, potentially doubling throughput.
- The device provides extremely low noise measurements allowing for short integration times and, thus, creates massive measuring timesaving.
