Hungarian SME offers cut, bent and welded corner component solutions for containers from flat-rolled steel plates
The company is a Hungarian engineering SME, developing applications for steel plates and profiles, processing technologies and efficient welding solutions. The innovation aims to provide EU container manufacturers with steel plate- and profile corner components for all container loads. The company has developed a new solution in line with increasing loads, and changing- and combined shipping- and handling conditions, and is seeking collaboration through a licence- or manufacturing agreement.
The 4-person private design and consulting enterprise has been affiliated to the container industry through its own manufacturing work since 1990. The company´s current professional background and product base centres on the parts and components manufactured by an external company, employing a staff of around 26. Sales and marketing research are carried out by internal and outsourced, contracted staff and companies.
The production process for casting corner components is complicated with high material- and energy demands, and is a ´hot technology´, harmful to human health and the environment. The known chemical- and mechanical properties and technology of castings do not fully meet current load-bearing and operational requirements and may break under normal ambient temperatures.
The innovative solution presented is suitable for known and expected load-bearing and handling conditions, and does not break when put under dynamic concentrated stress, ie. when it is overloaded.
The solution is to produce corner components from increased yield strength, micro-alloyed plates or profiles in the manner described, to replace castings in more demanding situations.
Certain basic items of equipment, such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) laser cutters, bending machines and assembly units, are able to produce the desired geometric form and size from plates without the need for subsequent processing. The fitted components are ready made to regulated specifications using either manual or automated welding equipment; the structure of the material does not change and subsequent heat treatment is not necessary.
Plans are in place to produce (third generation) from open profiles, 8-10 times stronger than current capacities, for the highest strength Liquefied Natural Gas containers using a 3D fiber laser.
The precision of components manufactured on CNC machines remains within 0.1-0.4mm of the tolerance of assembled corner components, without the need for subsequent processing and heat treatment. The product complies with EN standards and is authorised to carry the CE marking to identify each item. It can replace Asian imports in the EU and become a market leader, while generating additional profits through sales of know-how on the third market and CO2 quota sales.
As a qualified supplier within the EU the company can, through a licence- or manufacturing agreement, be a co-operation partner for expanding private- and public- sector companies, employing a staff of between 15-100, specialising in constructing and repairing containers.
Hungarian scientific knowledge of a qualified manufacturer combined with high tech machinery and highly skilled staff ensures the innovative product matches and even exceeds the quality of many similar EU or imported products. Obtaining a product from an international organisation is an assurance and an additional guarantee, with annual checks ensuring a consistent quality standard is maintained and improved upon, and discrepancies are eliminated.
The company supports customers´ ideas, as they seek to realise their many specific aims, with intelligent technology and equipment, and would look to integrate partners´ commercial and market knowledge, opportunities and capital strength in the medium term.
Advantages and Innovations:
The solution presented has been specifically designed and developed for mass production on the domestic market. The product weighs 3.5-5.0kg less per item than the casting equivalent, but is still resistant to overloading down to -40oC. The casting technology used eliminates discrepancies and effects which may be harmful to health and the environment, while offering the added benefit of being able to export CO2 quota.
The innovation was realised by assessing the disadvantages of using casting corner components and was developed into the modern, high-tech form and design presented today through a new patent-protected process.
The increasing instances of damage and accidents highlight the dangers and risks arising from casting defects. The "cut, bent and welded corner component from flat-rolled steel plates" replaces castings and may be used to ISO, EURO and partly also to US Domestic loading capacities and dimensions. It is compatible with, and at least equivalent and in many cases superior to castings.
Competitive and environmentally sound production methods used ensure compliance with EN requirements and acceptance standards, and are also inspected and certified by an international classification organisation.
High volume industrial production is high standard, efficient and economical. The corner components are favourable in terms of size and other specifications, weighing 3.5-5.0kg less per item and with an energy requirement of 38-43% of the casting equivalent. There is little or virtually no harmful impact on environmental- or human health. Penalties for exceeding the CO2 quota and any savings which may be The EU is currently forced to import approximately 800,000 castings per year from Asia. Although this number is decreasing, it still means = $16m per year. Plans and calculations have been made based on Hungary supplying 240,000-320,000 items per year.
