Description:
A well-known German research institute has made significant progress in finding a solution for the area monitoring of neutron radiation around those nuclear plants and equipment emitting ionising radiation (e. g. nuclear engineering, medicine, research). It is therefore necessary to measure the ambient equivalent dose of all components generating ionising radiation outside the plant, for example at the fences surrounding the company premises. Equipment used for this task has to be able to distinguish between radiation of natural and artificial origin. Furthermore, the influence of interference on the measured value has to be insignificant. The institute´s new development is meeting these high demands marking a new milestone in measurement technology.

Technical description

The measuring method uses the well-known principle of a moderator, in which neutrons are decelerated and then detected in the moderator with the aid of a suitable detector. The new development leads to a measuring instrument with a response capacity that reduces the display by natural neutron radiation as much as possible. Furthermore, the influence of disturbances on the measurement result is limited because various physical laws are used to independently detect and correct disturbances. These laws are the pulse height variation of the neutron-induced measurement signals (see figure) and the time sequence of the measurement signals. Furthermore, the intensity of natural neutron radiation and its temporal fluctuation are taken into account and corrected independently.

Application

The device allows the area monitoring for neutron radiation in which the dose values to be monitored are within the range of the natural background by cosmic radiation. The intelligent data analysis integrated in the measuring device leads to a significant improvement in measurement accuracy and to significantly lower susceptibility to interference. In contrast to the use of conventional devices, the distinction between artificial and natural radiation requires neither additional examinations nor extensive expertise.
Many nuclear plants worldwide are in operation which are monitored with regard to the emission of ionising radiation. Such a system is therefore also highly relevant for export.
The research institute is searching for licensees, interested in the commercial use of the offred Technology.
