Una empresa biotecnológica italiana ha desarrollado una nueva familia de marcadores de ADN que ofrece la posibilidad de diferenciar e identificar especies y subespecies bacterianas filogenéticamente cerradas incluso mezcladas. Estos nuevos marcadores son eficaces para diferenciar e identificar microorganismos gracias a las secuencias de polimorfismos de un solo nucleótido (SNP) y polimorfismos de longitud (inserciones/deleciones). La nueva familia de marcadores es una herramienta multiplataforma altamente configurable y de bajo coste para la identificación y cuantificación de 1) lactobacilos, bifidobacterias y bacilos que forman esporas incluidos en los productos probióticos más comunes, incluso en mezclas de múltiples cepas, 2) bacilos que forman esporas comúnmente aplicados como biofertilizantes y biopesticidas en agricultura y 3) otros microorganismos de interés. La empresa ha solicitado una patente internacional y busca socios estratégicos en los sectores alimentario y analítico con el fin de desarrollar y comercializar nuevos kits de aplicación y establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica y licencia.

The company has already filled an international patent application and now it is looking for strategic partners in food and analytical sectors for the development of new kits and applications and their commercialisation through technical cooperation and licensing agreements.

Microbial identification is still a challenge. Actual methods like as 16S, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) or Next Gen Sequencing (NGS) have major drawbacks like accuracy (e.g. 16S is unable to sort out closely related species), costs and time (e.g. MLST takes days with relatively high costs, and NGS is no better), but the main issue is that none of these methods is really effective when a mix is under scrutiny.
The biotech company from northern Italy has developed a new family of DNA markers which offers the possibility to differentiate and identify phylogenetically closed bacterial species and subspecies even in mix.
These new markers are effective in differentiating and identifying microorganisms thanks to both sequence (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms - SNPs) and length polymorphism (insertions/deletions). Moreover, these markers share high sequence variability with protein coding genetic markers (e.g. those applied in MLST), that is useful to identify closely related species and subspecies and also to differentiate strains that group together with MLST. Companies working in food and analytical sectors are sought to develop new diagnostic kits and/or use this technology in applications relevant for their businesses, through technical cooperation and licensing agreements.
Advantages and Innovations:
The new markers family is an highy customizable, low cost, multi-platform tool for the identification and quantification of:

- lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and spore-forming bacilli included in the most common probiotic products, even when they are in multi-strain mix.

- spore forming bacilli commonly applied in agriculture as bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides.
