Una universidad alemana ha descubierto una nueva fuente para la producción biotecnológica de ácido aminolevulínico (ALA), que se emplea en terapia antitumoral. Los investigadores utilizan metanol como única fuente de energía y carbono. El metanol es fácilmente accesible y es una materia prima calculable. La administración de ALA en tejidos tumorales favorece la formación de porfirina en el interior de las células. Las porfirinas acumuladas generan especies de oxígeno reactivo que al excitarse con la luz provocan la muerte de la célula tumoral. La universidad busca compañías o instituciones en los campos farmacéutico y biotecnológico con el fin de establecer acuerdos de cooperación técnica y licencia.

Description:
The production of aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is the first step in the biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles and porphyrines (like Chlorophyll, vitamin B12, heme). Recently ALA has attracted interest as a selective and biodegradable herbicide and insecticide. In addition ALA can be applied in the photodynamic therapy and treatment of various kinds of cancer.
The administration of ALA in the tumorous tissue leads to a porphyrin formation inside the cells. Accumulated porphyrins generate reactive oxygen species when excited by light which can lead to death of the tumorous cell. Currently, the state of the art production of ALA is a biotechnological process using bacterial strains like E. coli with carbohydrates like glucose as C-source.

A German university developed an ALA production process based on bacillus methanolicus, a gram-positive bacterium which is able to use C1-compounds like methanol as the only C- and energy source. Methanol as C-source has the advantage that it is easily accessible and is in contrast to glucose not competing to agricultural or food processes. In addition thereto, the price is not dependent on unforeseeable factors like agricultural politics or the weather conditions.

A technical cooperation is of interest with companies who would like to establish the productions strain of ALA or to apply for public project funding.
