Fiber optical sensor systems - research organisations sought
Summary:
A Swedish SME is active in the area of developing modules, subsystems and systems based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for telecommunication and fiber optical sensing. They are looking for partners within applied research, for technical or research cooperation agreements in the field of fibre optical sensing, particularly concerning harsh environment packaging, optronics and metrology.
Description:
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a type of distributed Bragg reflector, constructed in a short segment of optical fiber, that reflects particular wavelengths of light and transmits all others. This is achieved by creating a periodic variation in the refractive index of the fiber core, which generates a wavelength-specific dielectric mirror. A fiber Bragg grating can therefore be used as an inline optical filter to block certain wavelengths, or as a wavelength-specific reflector.

The Swedish SME has its main office in the Stockholm region, where also main functions such as manufacturing, research and development are located. Sales offices are present in Sweden, Asia and the US.

The company´s core technology is design and manufacturing of complex fiber Bragg gratings. The product offering is divided into three different areas:

* Fiber optical sensor systems (FOSS)
* Dispersion compensation modules (DCM)
* Optical layer monitors (OLM).

To date around 2,500 - 3,500 complex FBGs, usually ranging from 1 meter to 10 meters, are produced per year. In existing premises, capacity could be extended to approximately 8,000 FBGs per year.

The offering within FOSS include: Interrogators, sensors, cabling, software, installation and commissioning. The SME is at present providing products and systems to blue chip companies like ABB and SAAB.

The company is seeking partners from applied research organisations, for further development of FOSS, in the form of technical or research cooperation agreements. Particular focus lies on harsh environment packaging, optronics and metrology.
Advantages and Innovations:
The company uses a proprietary method to produce its FBGs. The principle is a direct write approach, which compared to using phase masks (like in semiconductor processing lithography) is much more flexible, and enables fabrication of larger and more advanced FBG designs with exceptional process control.
The company is certified in accordance with SSEN ISO 9001:2008.

From 1997, a total of 61 patents have been granted.
At present, the company holds 23 patents worldwide (SE, US, CA, JP, AT, EP, WO, ...).
