Description:
In the UK, 6.2 million homes, in the Netherlands, 2.65 million homes built before the 1920s have uninsulated suspended timber floors, and it is anticipated that further ~10 millions of homes have similar floor construction across North-Western European region (Belgium, North-France, North-Germany) resulting in a 18.3 million homes European market.

Despite the fact that heat loss through floors accounts for up to 20-25% of the total heat loss of older properties, floor insulation has not become widespread yet, due to the high disruption (takes 4-5 weeks to install) and high costs (costs £4-5,000 per property). These cold, draughty, uncomfortable floors not only cause huge discomfort and unnecessary excess on heating bills to residents, but could also can cause condensation that can lead to damp-induced health issues.

To address this challenge, this UK-based company designed and developed an innovative, low-cost, non-disruptive technology to insulate suspended floors without the need to remove floor boards (or to even enter the property). It achieves this by using a unique telescoping applicator that accesses the floor void via external air bricks while it can be operated by the installer from the outside.

As a result, they can provide a solution that is 60% cheaper, 5x faster and 80% less disruptive than incumbent methods, saving up to 2,900 kWh (£150) per year for residents. Considering the nearly 20 million homes market across the EU, it has the potential to significantly contribute to carbon emission savings and fuel poverty mitigation.

The UK company owns the IP of the applicator device and they have partnered with an insulation manufacturer company that provides the thermal insulation material. The SME has built up relationships with a UK based installer, but they are exploring other European countries where the market is large:
They are seeking for local installers, and/or large retrofit contractors to test their product under a license agreement.

- Easy entry access: the ability to insulate hard-to-reach areas by using a unique telescopic applicator designed to access the subfloor via exterior airbricks, in a fast, automatic way without causing any disruption

- Navigation through obstacles: thanks to its unique guidance system and compact design it enables the operators to easily navigate through sub-floor obstacles (service pipes, sleeper walls) and apply the insulation evenly

- Ease of use: the device is compatible with multiple insulation materials and it can be operated by installers with minimal training only, thanks to its easy-to-use nature

Furthermore, it can insulate all types of suspended floors, regardless of void depth, built form and construction. As a result, it can open up an untapped ~18 million homes market across Europe.

Installers, retrofit contractors will then be able to provide a low-cost, non-disruptive floor insulation solution for their clients, which can then significantly improve the profitability of a conventionally low-margin work, attract more customers and increase their revenue.
