The UK SME specialises in manufacturing integrated hydrogen energy solutions that are rapid response and high pressure, meeting the requirements for grid balancing and energy storage services, and for the production of clean fuel for transport, renewable heat and chemicals.
The increasing penetration of renewables has meant that the electricity grid regularly becomes saturated, resulting in the curtailment of green energy. The company has developed a novel power to gas technology to alleviate this problem. Power to gas is the process of converting surplus renewable energy into hydrogen gas by rapid response electrolysis and its subsequent injection into the gas distribution network. This is coupled to a gas mixing plant which ensures that the mixture of hydrogen in the gas distribution network does not exceed local regulations. That means, when too much power is on the electrical grid, at the request of the transmission system operator (TSO), the load of the electrolyser will be increased contributing to the stability of the electricity grid.
The company is looking to establish contacts with with local authorities, energy companies with the aim of transferring the technology through scalable pilot projects which will lead to proper commercial cooperation (commercial cooperation with technical assistance).
Advantages and Innovations:
Power to gas technology allows for the storage of significant amounts of energy and the provision of CO2 neutral fuels in the form of the resulting renewable energy gas mix of hydrogen and methane.
The hydrogen produced is injected into the natural gas system to displace natural gas, so reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance upon fuel imports. If the power is derived mainly from renewable power sources, only low-carbon hydrogen will be produced. Thereby the power to gas approach can facilitate a transition from natural gas to a ´green´ mixed gas by making use of existing energy grids, while facilitating the integration of additional renewables on the grid.
