Spanish technology center looks for partners to develop and improve the filtering applications by means of ceramic and clay materials
Spanish private technology centre, wich is specializing in clay and ceramic materials, requests partners to develop technologies related with the use of clays and clay-based ceramics as a filter material and to deepen the potential of their practical applications. Research cooperation and technical cooperation agreements are sought.
In 2005 was created this technology centre as a private non-profit foundation and is specialized in the ceramic sector with the collaboration of the main stakeholders involved (some of the most important ceramic manufacturers in Spain) and local and regional administration. Its activity has been focused in ceramic materials based on fired clay with structural, construction or artistic purposes, in order to encourage the transfer of information, innovation and technology among knowledge-generating institutions as university, public research entities and final user.

The proposal of using clay, as a natural nanomaterial, for water treatment seeks to take advantage of this material potential and develop new high-added value applications.

Currently, the main industrial applications are produced through modified clays for absorbing organic micro-pollutants like oils and fats traces or pesticides. In the case of fired clay ceramic materials, controlling the size and volume of pores present in these materials allows designing suitable materials for a particular need of filtration and is particularly interesting for operations with corrosive fluids and / or at high temperature.

However, despite these advantages the use of clays in this field is very limited, leaving important aspects to develop in order to overtake the technological barriers that hinder their use.

The technology center is currently working on a project to test the different filtering properties that each kind of clay has, to reveal which one is better for diverse needs. For this purpose the center counts with a Pilot Filter and a team of specialist on this field, however the institution have not a wide experience in filter systems, water treatment and waste treatment and they need some support to deepen the practical applications of the project.

For this reason the center is interested in making research and technical cooperation agreements for the co-development of technologies and methods on this field.

Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
In the case of clays, the most appropriate configurations are packing in columns with fixed or fluidized bed. These materials emerge as an interesting option action for both batch and continuous operations to combined in an integrated system with adsorption and filtration.
It is also open to study any other application of clay in this field.

The technology center is looking for enterprises or research centers with expertise in water treatment, filtering and/or purification (other contaminant effluents) to create synergies in the research project and get to implement practical applications
