Looking for a complete technological solution for managing Olive Mill Waste (OMW) water
Summary:
A Greek SME is producing olive oil. The company is looking for a technical solution able to deal with the Olive Mill Waste (OMW) water. It is a complex problem which has to take care a lot of chemical substances of great volume. Some of these substances could be useful if separated. The Greek company would like to examine complete and proven solution in a commercial collaboration with technical assistance.
Description:
A Greek SME in the field of olive oil production is looking for a complete and proven technology concerning the olive oil mill waste water.

Basically, two things come out of an olive when someone mills it: olive oil and water. The oil is separated and sold. Managing the water, on the other hand is a delicate and expensive challenge. The management of waste water remains a critical and unsolved problem, especially in regions where huge quantities are produced.

In the heart of the problem lies the Olive Mill Waste water (OMW) composed of a large variability of substances depending on several parameters such as cultivar, harvesting time and oil extraction technology. OMW is a dark liquid effluents characterized by high concentrations of organic compounds that are only partially biodegradable, including organic acids, sugars, tannins, pectins and phenolic substances that make them phytotoxic and inhibit bacterial activity. It also contains a certain percentage of mineral compounds.

A part of the solution is the exploitation of some useful byproducts of the OMW such as the phenolic compounds, recognized for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobic properties. Therefore, solutions that can separate these compounds could be more viable in terms of economic operation. The recovery of these bioactive chemicals from olive mill waste waters could be used by the pharmaceutical, nutritional and cosmetic industries.

The Greek company is looking for a proven solution, based on every possible technology. The central request is for an effective system, easy to install and affordable to buy and operate. The Greek company wishes to have a commercial cooperation agreement with technical assistance with companies offering affordable and effective systems.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The Greek company would like to examine solutions of any available technology. The requirements are for a complete system, affordable to buy and operate. The system should deal effectively with the substances that pollute such as the organic acids, sugars, tannins, pectins etc. In the same time, the useful byproducts based on phenolic compounds could be separated and sold to other industries.

Partner sought

Type and Role of Partner Sought:
The Greek company would like to examine systems for solving the problem. The companies which provide such systems should be able to demonstrate and prove their effectiveness. The type of collaboration sought is commercial agreement with technical assistance. It is expected that the producer of the system would be willing to collaborate with the Greek company in order to specify the problem in detail based on the local parameters set by the type of olives, the climate and the regional morphology.
