New type of lead acid battery
Summary:
A group of Romanian companies is involved in designing and research of new type of grid and new composite materials for the lead acid battery. The group is looking for manufacturers of batteries, able to reduce as much as possible the weight of the entire lead acid battery and to conclude a manufacturing agreement.
Description:
Lead acid batteries are the preferred choice for powering automobiles due to certain advantages they carry and also because they are economically viable.
Today´s lead acid batteries used for powering the automobiles have a limited power range and with the demand for power increasing among the automobiles, automotive vendors and battery manufacturers have been on the lookout for an efficient power device that provides the perfect solution in addition to being cost effective.
With the advent of hybrid electric vehicles and battery powered vehicles, the demand for batteries has been on the upswing. Also, the fact that batteries are environmentally friendlier in comparison to the existing petroleum products that are used to power the automobiles make them much more valuable as a product for use in transportation.
The grid weight can be optimized by design and research new composite materials for light weight grids. Currently, the group of the companies are researching to develop innovative multilayer composite grids as engineered materials, which are produced in the form of grid strip in a single, highly efficient, multistage deposition process. The multilayer composite materials are composed of different layers of different structures and properties, which can provide a combination of different functional properties to satisfy a more demanding total specification of mechanical behaviour, electrical performance, corrosion resistance and cycling behaviour.
The proposed structure for experimentation was designed to contain several layers. Actually, the grid is an expanded Aluminium-Copper(Al-Cu)- Plumbum-Stannum (PbSn) structure covered with a thin layer of lead. As the electrical conductivity of Al-Cu-(Pb-Sn) structure is much higher than that of lead, less grid material is required. It is important to realize that the use of Al-Cu instead of lead for the negative grid not only is a benefit during discharge, but also provides a greatly improved charge acceptance with better energy efficiency. Since the Cu rich particles are extremely small in size, isolated and very dilute, they have no deleterious chemical effect on the battery performance because there is no significant amount of Cu dissolution and deposition on the negative plate.
It should be noted that this type of low-resistivity variant of a composite grid, Al-Cu-(Pb Sn) structure covered with a thin layer of lead, could be utilised for positive plates without any limitation because the Cu layer is fully encapsulated by a corrosion resistant pure Pb-Sn outer layer, which prevents the Cu from being dissolved in the battery electrolyte throughout the battery life.
The case can be optimized by designing and researching new composite materials for battery case. The case can be made for instance from carbon fiber composites or thermoplastic polymer (PP or PE) by injection with bubble generator to obtain a high porosity.
The group of the companies is looking for manufacturers of batteries who developed the requested technology and to create together a new type of battery, based on a manufacturing agreement.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
Reducing as much as possible the weight of the entire lead-acid battery and hence increasixng the energy density.
- the modification of metallic connectors connecting the cells further reduces the weight and decreases the batteries internal resistance;
- the investigation of alternate grid materials for electrode;
- design and testing solutions for low weight of container.
